

I would like to set the default for the 'Footnote' style to a smaller pitch, but it is not available in the 'styles' list, nor can I select all similar. Word automatically sets the footnote font to 10-pitch. In Word 2003 (possibly 2002 as well), right-click in a Footnote Text paragraph, choose Styles., and proceed as in (2). In the Format Settings dialog and proceed as in (2). In Word 2002 or 2003, choose Custom in the S&F task pane, then click Styles. If you're using Word 2000 or earlier, you can choose Format| Style, and select the Footnote Text style, and choose Modify.

The only reason this would be helpful is if you had changed the font of a single footnote and wanted to update the style by example. In any version of Word, you can force the Styles dropdown to show all styles (ALL styles, not just what the S&F pane lists as 'All Styles') by pressing Shift while you click on the arrow beside the box. Contrary to Doug's instructions, this style will NOT be listed in the Styles and Formatting task pane even if you select All Styles, but there are several other ways to access it: 1. The Style you're looking for is Footnote Text. If you do not see the button, follow this link to open the suggestion in the Microsoft Web-based Newsreader and then click 'I Agree' in the message pane. To vote for this suggestion, click the 'I Agree' button in the message pane. This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. I also prefer to have them in a different font style. By reducing the font to 9 or 8, the notes are more presentable. Today's URLs tend to be very long, and leaves half a line above as it jumps to the next line.

I'm still running Word for Mac 2011, and when I do Insert>Footnote, I get a dialogue box that gives the option to either number the footnotes continuously, restart with each page, or restart with each section.
